Why bulky coats aren’t safe in the car

Thick jumpers and winter coats are great outdoors, but in a car seat they can be risky. Bulky layers make the harness feel tight when in reality it’s too loose.

This is known as harness slack: any extra layer between your child and the harness creates hidden space, delaying restraint performance and potentially increasing impact forces in a crash.
